| Notes |
- Was 3 years old when his parents came over from near Riga
Hyman's daughter, Marion writes:
"My father, Hyman, went to Central High School (Scranton PA), Money was hard to
come by and sometimes there was scarcely enough for the whole family. Pop would
often go off to school without breakfast. On the way, he passed Wolfgan's
Bakery. He would stop for a moment to stare at the goodies displayed there.
One day Mrs. Wolfgang came out and gave him a cake which he was very happy to
receive. Thereafter, whenever he went by, she would come out and give him
something.
"But high school didn't last long for Pop. One day he got into an argument with
the principal and pushed him down the stairs. That was the end of Pop's high
school education. He then attended Lackawanna Business School from which he
eventually graduated. He became bookkeeper for a food broker. He was earning $20
a week, which was enough to support a wife in those days. The food broker told
him of a grocery store in Green Ridge (a section of Scranton) that was for sale.
He bought the store, at 2511 Olyphant Avenue, and he and my mother were married
on December 24, 1911.
