| Notes |
- 1900 census lists her birthdate as Dec. 1888, Pennsylvania
1910 Census lists her birthdate as abt. 1889
1930 census lists her age as 38, giving her a birthdate of 1892, and birthplace of Pennsylvania.
BRC note: Since the 1900 census was taken in 5-Jun-1900, Ella must have been born prior to the census taker’s visit! I can see a baby being accidentally left off a census, but NOT accidentally included!
I think this note from my Grandmother Marion’s family history book resolves the issue:
“That reminds me of my mother. We suspected that Mom was a year or two older than Pop and she didn’t want anyone to know that. For years on her birthday she announced that she was 42. She said this for so many years that we really didn’t know how old she really was. It didn’t matter to us. But when she died, we didn’t know what date to put on her gravestone. Ruth and Gene and I hashed it over and came to the conclusion that, since she wanted to be the same age as Pop, we would make it so. The gravestone was engraved accordingly.” [Dear Children, Book Three, page 9]
