As I do this genealogy research I'll add to this page any books I enjoyed and recommend.
Kimberly Powell's The Everything Guide to Online Genealogy was a good way to get started. At the time I read this book I'd already joined ancestry.com, and done some work on my own. This book gave me a better sense of which documents to focus on, and how to move forward in some situations where I was stuck. It has a useful chapter on researching immigrant ancestors.
Kati Marton's The Great Escape covers the lives of nine Jewish Hungarians who lived through Budapest, Hungary's Golden Age, and fled the coming war. For someone trying to get a better sense of Hungarian history it's an interesting entree into that world. It's hard to follow as the author skips back and forth between the different biographies, but I think it's an interesting read.
